>Does anyone find compression kind of unnecessary where most people are using it?
>putting it on the master just fucks up the dynamics
yes compression is misused most of the time but not for the above reason. believing in blanket statements that compression "fucks up dynamics" means you don't really understand compression.
what kind of settings are we talking? did you know it's possible to improve dynamics using compression as well?
you don't have to activate makeup gain on every single compressor instance. compression is a very precise and flexible tool for controlling time events, and since music largely consists of frequencies + time, there are too many places for compression to list here properly. people misuse compression because they don't use the correct time settings, due to the fact that compressors operate in very small time frames, too small for inexperienced people to hear correctly, so you get unnecessary and inaccurate pumping. while premade samples are typically compressed, you can tame the ugliest vengeance snare samples with additional compression and EQ
the problems start when you always have that make up gain button activated and don't understand what your settings are doing to the sound
