folk music made in folk cultures usually isn't made by the left-wing, usually by people of a diversity of political opinions and who aren't too far left or right. Traditional music attracts a lot of right-wing musicians and listeners but there's plenty of left-wing ones as well like Ewan MacColl. It's just anyone into folk culture and history, anyone interested in their own country or background or surrounding areas as well as people who want to learn about foreign places, it attracts the musicians and luthiers who want challenges like to resurrect instruments from the dead like säckpipa was and in general learn by ear and play with things people are forgetting exist. but I guess you're probably not referring to the same kind of folk music as I am, same as American use the term 'conservative' wrong. I would probably say it's more Romantic and right-wing 'socially conservative' than it is left-wing. In a way he's right to think of 75 year old conservatives, in fact a lot of folk music traditions are dying with people who are that age and musically conservative.
