I agree that the early late 70searly 80s disco-ey hip-hop is listenable.
But think the late 80s public enemey/N.W.A/tribe called quest has a definite place in music history and still entertaining from a certain standpoint.
Biggie's sound is kind of dated 'cause no one really carried it forward. But Tupacs style sounds somewhat contemporary due to a decade long time where everyone was kind running the same thing, even Eminem, whom in his prime was a pretty amazing lyricist, in many ways fit into the writing style of Tupac.
Kanyes production on The Blueprint really changed the sound of Hip-Hop, and was the real start of the genre broadening. We got TRAP shit, sk8er shit, pop shit, house shit, screamo shit, "hip-hop as a term has become like 'rock'" - absurdly vague so we say things like acid rap.
I think Hair Metal could one day be seen as a good comparison to the stuff Kanye does, that heavy pop influence they both had, the focus on making STADIUM level shit.
The rap that has really survived was more story-telling based like illmatic, that shit sounds like folk-rock compared to what Kanye is making with stuff like OnSITE
