I think one of your fundamental misunderstandings about the nature of modern music is a fixation on "good", "enjoyable" or "pleasant". Re-examine your criteria.
As an example: people have not held Citizen Kane up as a monumental movie because it was better at conveying romance than Romeo and Juliet. CK ushered in a new era of camerawork and direction. If your criteria for judging movies is not inclusive of direction, you will not find Citizen Kane particularly interesting, maybe not even enjoyable.
