>Kengo Iuchi - 犬神と家畜
Death Folk. Brilliant idea but the execution...actually, hold on for a minute. I already listened to this guy once. A very lo-fi live performance from 89. I listened to it once but I felt like I was not ready enough for what Iuchi had to offer. The covers though have this bootleg design with red being the prevalent color. No wonder I thought I already had the album when I saw the album cover. Now I went into this one expecting it to be somewhat similar to what I recollect + with my extensive knowledge of Haino I wanted to see how it will sound comparatively. Even people on RYM called him "poor man's Keiji Haino". 2 tracks in I was sort of agreeing with him but the third track and further made me realize that this guy is much more of a Jandek then Haino.
His primary tool is an acoustic in a very Jandekesque (yes, that's a word now) tuning. Even the screams this guy produces seem to be closer to the wild Jandek then wild Haino. From there on I switched my perception on the analysis approach. Instead of looking for Haino's haunting atmosphere that usually has a very "emotionally free" sense to his music, I looked at it as a carefully captured emotional single emotional state of a musician. I know it makes little sense but that's what my sense are telling me. From then on not only the musical content got better (background noises to support the acoustic and the voice, pots and pans being clattered) but also my understanding of who this dude is. I only wish the lyrical content was clearer to me since it might be one of the keys to this guy's message.
I really enjoyed this and will return to Iuchi again, hopefully this time even more prepared. I need to research this dude.

yes, it really upset me. Would have been fantastic. Hopefully Gero will catch on to the trends and bring us a mastershit.
