Different guy chiming in. While I agree that both mediums are quite congested with samey attempts at making money, anime does more often than not try to reach further out into much more unique territory, whether they fail is subjective for the most part. I mean, you can have series like Serial Experiments Lain, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Kaiba and Mushishi, all existing within the same medium, yet each are quite unique, not only to each other, but just about everything else, anime or not. It's interesting just how much more diverse the subject matter can be for anime compared to Western efforts, especially considering it comes from some tiny island to the east filled with much less cultural diversity comparatively. Though to be fair, anime lends itself to much more abstract stuff since there are less limitations with animation than live action with what can be done.
