Since I just uploaded this, have it:
Sun Ra and his Solar Arkestra - Art Forms of Dimensions Tomorrow (recorded between 61 and 62, released 1965 for some god forsaken reason)
Yes lol we wuz kangs, whatever, it's great music.
Art Forms of Dimensions Tomorrow Is one of the very first (although there were some clues as to what was to come on albums such as Interstellar Low Ways [59/60] and Angels & Demons At Play [1960]) complete examples of weirdness the Arkestra were dishing out back then. In an era where Coleman was discovering absolute freedom with his benchmark album "Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation For Double Quartet", Ayler was dishing out his own brand of schizophrenic Bebop with works such as Spiritual Unity (amongst other four albums also recorded in 1964), Coltrane was just starting to fool around with afrocentric influences and Davis was too busy exploring Third Stream and setting the bases for Post-Bop, the Arkestra were busy doing such things as making extensive use of tape effects, an ever increasing focus on percussion and texture, improvisation (of course) and pretty much just creating the jazz equivalent of psychedelia.
To quote Wikipedia:
"[...]Sun Ra began to regularly violate this convention on the Saturn releases by recording live at strange sites, by using feedback, distortion, high delay or reverb, unusual microphone placement, abrupt fades or edits, and any number of other effects or noises which called attention to the recording process. On some recordings you could hear a phone ringing, or someone walking near the microphone. It was a rough style of production, an antistyle, a self-reflexive approach which anticipates both free jazz recording conventions and punk production to come."
If you want to know what the deal with Sun Ra being all weird is, this is a good place to start.
