Starting with one of my favorites
Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber - Harmonia artificiosa-ariosa
Played by Musica Antiqua Koeln
https://mega.co.nz/#!HdQ11Y5C!MXuFWhNAfC2GOTBqMQIh63YMTMxPEXTghiZHlz0lITw
>Biber was in a sense the Paganini of his time, the fiddler whose virtuosity seemed almost like a Faustian bargain, and the bulk of his music was written for violinists of diabolical skill. Expect fireworks, eccentricity, and artifice in any consort music by Biber. This performance of Harmonia artificiosa is a prime example, and this sort of music is exactly fitted to the skills and temperament of Reinhard Goebel, who has now recovered most of his astonishing virtuosity after a hideous bowing-arm problem that almost finished his playing career.

(warning: massive file)
https://mega.co.nz/#!uBpnEQ5S!B45Mj0JJPinjd10-6M6y3QTg4J0P8yuS_CiX977fd9U
>The magnificent instrument used here is celestial in tone. To those for whom Bach fugues conjure up images of Christopher Lee playing Dracula, or dull Sundays in church, here is one of the great achievements of Western civilization, a glittering pinnacle of Baroque art, performed by a great modern spirit, in one handy box. You can't have Michaelangelo ceilings in your home, or Bernini bronzes in your living room, but by golly, you can put this on your stereo.

I honestly wouldn't recommend it unlike you want your pianissimo parts drowned in surface noise (often paired with distorted ff). There's a reason why classical listeners were the first to abandon vinyl, and it's not (primarily) the longer playing time.

Bach: Concertos
Played by The English Concert
https://mega.co.nz/#!nM4ykZjQ!Fc1tdhXNlaLw5iTm8YoefEHCS5lBYyqagPzTbqsECnU
>The performances are uniformly excellent. Pinnock's Bach is brisk and sprightly when it should be, but also tender and relaxed when it must be. He is not afraid to slow down and savour the music, unlike many period-performance specialists. He is one of the world's great harpsichordists and his partners in the multiple concerti are also excellent. Simon Standage yields nothing to better-known soloists in the violin concerti.

Dunno, I haven't heard them all. I would try Scherchen, Schreier, Shaw and Klemperer. Gardiner's is also very good.

Schreier and Shaw are very well known for their choral recordings. I haven't heard Celibidache but I'm a big fan of his Brahms German Requiem so I would give that one a go. Download them all and see which you like the best.

Classical newfag here. I've listened to quite a bit of classical music; the odd track here and there. Currently I really enjoy Listzt and Schoenberg. However, I have no knowledge whatsoever about classical music. I just listen to it and what I enjoy I listen again. What works would you recommend as being key works so that I can get started actually understanding classical music?

Paranoia /ˌpærəˈnɔJə/ (adjective: paranoid /ˈpærənɔJd/) is a thought process believed to be heavily influenced by anxiety or fear, often to the point of irrationality and delusion. Paranoid thinking typically includes persecutory beliefs, or beliefs of conspiracy concerning a perceived threat towards oneself. (e.g. "Everyone is out to get me.")
Making false accusations and the general distrust of others also frequently accompany paranoia. For example, an incident most people would view as an accident or coincidence, a paranoid person might believe was intentional.

It's nearly Bach's entire solo Organ repertoire, as well as Walcha's interpretation of the Art of Fugue. The pieces it does not include are those discovered following its recording and those of dubious authenticity. http://www.amazon.com/review/R1QRX1J4OU0VS9/ref=cm_cr_pr_cmt?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00004SAAX&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag=#wasThisHelpful for the full list.

Their recordings of Biber's Battalia and Sonata Representativa are top-notch, but what really makes the album is his 7th partita. Il Giardino even outdoes Goebel in this. Zelenka is barely represented, and Locke's The Tempest is rather uninteresting program music. Still, I recommend downloading this album solely for the partita.

Don't think this volume is up on rutracker yet. So does anyone have volume 53 which came out march this year? I'm dying to hear Suzuki's interpretation of Canata 177.

Yep, they're on different disks though since Suzuki went through them in rough chronological order of composition. So Canata 12 is in volume 3, Cantata 103 is in volume 36 and Cantata 146 is in volume 44. Do you want me to zip them up and upload them, or do you already have the entire package from rutracker already?

Sure, I'm uploading the Suzuki edition now. Want the other editions for comparative purposes as well? I've got the Gardiner, Koopman, and Rilling in Lossless and Leusink in lossy. I wouldn't recommend the Rilling though since his large choir almost completely drowns out the solo organ and orchestral parts.

Thanks! I happen to share your sentiment, that augmentation inversion canon really is some mind bending stuff. One question: does this recording include the Anhang as well? (early version of the Augmentation Inversion Canon and a mirror fugue arranged for two keyboards)

Goebel includes the arrangement of the Contrapunctus XIII but not the early augmentation/inversion canon. The only recording I recall with that is by the Emerson String Quartet.

In this album, Grimaud plays "The Great" prelude & fugue for organ in A minor (BWV543) as arranged for the piano by Liszt. It's what got me on the hunt for Liszt transcriptions. Here's the fugue part, though played by someone else.

Super Audio CD (SACD) is a read-only optical disc for audio storage, introduced in 1999. It was developed jointly by Sony and Philips Electronics, and intended to be the successor to their Compact Disc format. While the SACD format can offer more channels (e.g. surround sound), and a longer playing time than CD, research published in 2007 found no significant difference in audio quality between SACD and standard CD.[1]

Having made little impact in the consumer audio market, by 2007 SACD was deemed to be a failure by the press.[2] In the 2010s, a small market for SACD remains, serving the audiophile community.[3]

But the only advantage is surround sound and as far as I'm aware most classical is stereo-only.

>> No.37645826

>>37645531
If you have a high quality surround setup, which will easily cost three times as much as similar quality stereo speakers, not to mention the problem or proper speaker placement (don't even bother if your listening room isn't big enough). And then of course you'll need to find good surround mixes of your favorite works and performances.

And that's not ven touching the question whether being surrounded by the musicians is actually a proper representation of classical music, which is normally listened to in a concert situation where "surround" would be limited to the concert hall's reverb.

Just picked up 2 Penderecki recordings from there.

Are all classical recordings this messy? I mean, it just adds a whole new level of confusion when the album artist and the album composer are 2 separate people.

Or when there's more than one album composer.

Yes. In general thhe composer is long dead so he isn't going to be the album artist.

Sort it however you wish in your music player - I personally get rid of all information except for composer (which I put in 'artist') and the piece name.

You're using torrents, only download the specific files you want, not the extra composers tacked onto the disc.

>I mean, it just adds a whole new level of confusion when the album artist and the album composer
You've never encountered cover-albums before? It's basically the same idea. E.g. many jazz albums will contain jazz standards which were not composed by the performers.

I just put the composer in the "artist" field and the performer in "album artist" for classical usually, since the composer is much more important.

I listen to a lot of music by the artist Hauschka
i really like the sound of piano pieces.

I don't have any other classical style music on my computer except from Steve Reich

anyone fancy recommending/pointing out a few piano albums to get that sound well recorded and not boring quiet 15 minute long pieces.

I suppose Bach and Brahms and Mozart etc is what I'm looking for played by contemporary people.
