I have been out of the pedal game for nearly a decade now. I just plug straight into my Deluxe Reverb and play but I want to get a bare bones pedal board. What are some basic essential pedals? OD, tuner, compressor, maybe chorus, maybe delay, maybe reverb (happy with the built in reverb in my amp though). I’ll probably just get basic Boss stuff or similar, I don’t want to break the bank.

Both Lucky Man and From the Beginning, (And Still... but to a lesser degree) have sections where it's clear the song was composed to be a mainstream-adjacent lead in to more progressive elements. I would still count them, because the only thing that seems to be a necessary criterion for calling music prog is whether or not the musicians themselves are considered prog.

I also consider the vocals to have a distinctively closer to prog quality than most of their contemporaries, and the bass on Still... is definitely also a prog element as it puts an emphasis on technical skill and the composition as a whole is more technical than the majority of popular ballad style songs of 1973.
I completely understand why someone else might exclude those songs from their particular definition of the genre, but I personally don't think a particularly strict or specific definition is constructive or even sufficient, because the only way to do that would be to split it into chronological subcategories which, again, don't have very much in common aside from the people who are making the music.
